A few years ago, my husband sat me down on the couch. He wore a serious expression that made me panic. With a straight face and shaking hands he said,
“Lynn, I have a confession to make.”
“Okay…” I said.
What was I walking into? Was he going to divorce me? Was he ill? Are we getting a dog?
While my mind raced to all of the possibilities, he finally blurted out:
“I’m actually really, really into Star Trek.”
I laughed. He didn’t.
After a few minutes of cajoling, I finally got him to admit that he truly thought I would leave him over this admission, because in the small town he grew up in, being a nerd like that was a bullying offense.
Now, friend, you have to know: on my first date with my husband, we watched Game of Thrones. He wore a Superman shirt. On his bicep is a Captain America shield. This man is, obstensibly, a muscle-bound nerd.
So him telling me he was into Star Trek was like… how could he not be?
Of course he was!
Yet this one thing felt so absolutely intimidating to admit that he hid it.
The marketing lesson here is this: chances are, you are attracting clients who would LOVE for you to bring out that element of how you work that you’re hiding.
In my case, it’s that I’m really energy sensitive and psychic, and into the metaphysics of marketing.
In your case, it’s…. what?
What are you hiding that your clients can probably tell you’re hiding, but you’re afraid that if you did your work in this way, you’d be rejected?
Play with this thought. What would really happen if you said “fuck it” and just opened up?
